The Fate of the Avante Garde, Part 2

In the early years of the twentieth century Russian Artists were at the forefront of innovation and exciting new forms. The October Revolution of 1917 ushered in a government concerned with art in the service of propaganda. As a result artists like Goncharova, Larionov, Popova and Exter left Russia. Others were exiled. One man, Igor Savitsky, collected paintings from artists in Moscow and made many trips by train and then by camel to Nukus, a remote village in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. There he saw to the founding of a large museum. Kerrin Meis visited the museum in 2010 and will discuss many of its works.
