Steady Days, Big Growth: Full-Day, Year-Long Preschool That Builds Social-Emotional Readiness for Kindergarten

January 27, 2026

For many families, preschool serves as the steady, trusted place that anchors a child’s week – and often, a parent’s workday. That reality is shaping what families are asking for in a preschool: continuity year-round, a full-day schedule, and a program that builds real social emotional skills and readiness for kindergarten.

Marin JCC Preschools have expanded to meet that need with a new full-day schedule (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) and year-long programming.

With more than 75 years of early childhood expertise, Marin JCC Preschools serve families at two locations in San Rafael and Mill Valley. Toddler programs are available at both locations, offering an on-ramp for the youngest learners and a consistent path forward as children grow.

The hallmark of JCC preschools is an intentionally “whole-child” approach, nurturing children through relationship-based teaching, meaningful play, and a values-grounded curriculum. Early literacy and numeracy are introduced in developmentally appropriate ways, but the primary emphasis is on the skills kindergarten teachers consistently say matter most: how children function in a group.

Through daily practice naming feelings, using words to solve problems, taking turns, listening during circle time, and building self-regulation skills, children learn to transition between activities, advocate for their needs, and navigate conflict constructively.

That social-emotional foundation is supported by a teaching approach that meets children where they are. With ample uninterrupted play, children have the time and space to develop friendships, test ideas, and return to interests with increasing complexity. Educators use thoughtful “scaffolding” to extend learning; they observe closely ask questions that expand children’s thinking, and guide them through hands-on exploration.

Families cite the warmth of the community as a defining feature. One parent shared that after a few days away, their child returned to preschool and said, “I felt like my heart was dancing!” Another described the program as “a second home,” adding: “The community I have found at the school has been priceless.”

At the center of the Marin JCC preschool community is a clear set of values: kindness, respect, and responsibility to one another, expressed through a Jewish lens while welcoming families of all backgrounds.  Values show up in how children are guided to participate in the classroom community, including inviting friends, repairing relationships, and recognizing that their actions impact others.

A practical strength that parents appreciate about Marin JCC preschools is individualized attention, supported by low teacher-to-child ratios that are well below state requirements.

Families also benefit from being part of the ecosystem of a JCC, including family events and celebrations, plus access to a larger community hub that many parents value long after preschool drop-off ends.
