Art as a Way Through Grief & Loss

Wednesday, July 16 @ 3:00 pm4:15 pm

Osher Marin JCC
200 North San Pedro Road
San Rafael, CA 94903 United States

Artists Sarah Cohen and Ellen Weinstein will join Rabbi Elana Rosen-Brown and Rabbi Alyson Solomon to talk about how art can get us through the toughest of times. We will hear from artists whose works are part of our exhibit Jewish Artists on Mental Health, on display in the JCC Gallery from July 6, 2025 – September 28, 2025. Then, together, we will study a bit of Jewish wisdom on grief, loss and explore themes of art and wholeness. Come add your voice and experience to the conversation. Melodies, tea and treats provided to keep things cozy.

All are welcome.

Co-sponsored by Congregation Rodef Sholom.

Sarah Cohen

Sarah Cohen has lived in San Francisco for over 25 years. Although she has been sewing since childhood, she began creating fabric art during the COVID-19 pandemic. She found the process both therapeutic and rewarding, as it provided personal fulfillment and the opportunity to create pieces that inspire others. She has worked for and volunteered with several Jewish organizations in the Bay Area, including AIPAC, JNF, Hadassah, JCRC, and Shalom Bayit. Sarah is a member of Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco and Congregation Beth Jacob in Redwood City, where Rabbi Nat Ezray inspired this artwork. This marks her premier show showcasing her artwork.

Ellen Weinstein

Ellen Weinstein’s art is deeply influenced by her passion for textiles, including sewing, quilting, weaving, dyeing, painting, and printing on fabrics. She has taught art to children of all ages in public and private schools, museums, and within the Jewish community. After earning a degree in Drawing and Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, Ellen discovered her love for textiles, with quilt making becoming her preferred medium for storytelling and self-expression. Hand sewing allows Ellen to delve deeper into the emotions and ideas she seeks to communicate through her work.
