A look at the history of the various denominations and religious beliefs within the Jewish community.
March 18: American Jewish Cultural Diversity
Assimilation vs. Acculturation, Jews in Hollywood and the evolving relationships between Jews and African Americans.
March 25: The American Jewish Family
We will focus on changing norms and gender roles; the importance of the Jewish mother and evolving definition of masculinity in the Jewish community.
ABOUT PROFESSOR ELAINE LEEDER: Elaine Leeder is a Professor Emerita of Sociology and the Dean Emerita of the School of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University in California. Previously she was a Professor at Ithaca College, Ithaca NY. She has 40 years of distinguished accomplishments and experience in academia and public service. Leeder is listed in Who’s Who of America Women, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Teachers. Her awards include a National Endowment of the Humanities Fellowship, Visiting Scholar status at the United States Holocaust Museum, outstanding teaching awards, research and travel grants and numerous awards from student and community agencies. Leeder has an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MPH from University of California at Berkeley and a PhD from Cornell University, has published five books and numerous articles. Her book The Family in Global Perspective: A Gendered Journey is based on her Semester At Sea voyages in 1992 and 1999. Her book My Life with Lifers: Lessons for a Teacher, Humanity Has No Bars describes her work at San Quentin State Prison. Her exemplary career encompasses roles as professor/teacher, psychotherapist, consultant, author and advocate for social justice.
She has taught a course on American Jewish Radicals at the Marin JCC and the Sonoma County JCC.
Prior to each lecture Gale Kissin, singer and guitarist, will delight us with songs from the various eras that Leeder will be covering.

WHAT TO EXPECT: A four-part course, taught by Professor Elaine Leeder, whose popular American Jewish Radicals course was hosted by the Osher Marin JCC in Spring 2019. This course delves into the historical richness and complexity of American Jewish life and culture. Each class builds on themes from previous classes, although each one can be taken on its own.
