Midday Movies: Oklahoma!

Wed, January 9, 2019

Share the delight of (re-)discovering a classic film and, if interested, stay after and chat with others about today’s specific film, about film in general, or about life!

Born into a prosperous German Jewish family in NYC, Richard Rodgers became an American composer of over 900 songs and 43 Broadway musicals, leaving a legacy as one of the most significant composers of 20th century American music. Son of a Jewish father and Episcopalian mother, Oscar Hammerstein II was a lyricist who co-wrote 850 songs, collaborating with composers such as Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, Sigmund Romberg and, most famously, Richard Rodgers. Of course, Rodgers & Hammerstein (R&H) teamed up to create some of the most iconic and beloved shows in the Broadway repertoire.  Revisit their classic musical that started it all – Oklahoma!
There's a box social coming up, and Curly (Gordon MacRae) asks Laurey (Shirley Jones) if she'll be his date. Trouble is, Laurey thinks he's waited too long, and in a fit accepts an offer from the boorish Jud (Rod Steiger) instead. Meanwhile, Laurey's friend Ado Annie (Gloria Grahame) is also torn between two men: a cowboy named Will (Gene Nelson) and a foreign peddler, Ali Hakim (Eddie Albert). Both women struggle to know their own hearts before it's too late. This masterpiece includes such well-known hits as "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “I Cain't Say No,” and "People Will Say We're In Love.”
The film is expected to run 1:00-3:25pm.
No-registration is necessary.  Just show up and join in!
