Carmen (January 31st)

Thursdays, Jan 10, Jan 31, Feb 28

Whether or not you plan to attend the fall Met HD broadcast performances, join Instructor James Sokol for interesting insights into Cilea’s lush and tragic Adriana Lecouvreur (1/10), Bizet’s exciting and sensuous Carmen (1/31) & Donizetti’s delightful and comic La Fille du Regiment (2/28).

Video clips bring the excitement and beauty of opera into the discussion. Our classes are perfect for the opera newcomer and the long-time devotee.

Adriana Lecouvreur (1/10)

The title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century audiences with her on-and offstage passion has been sung by the superstar ranks of Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballé, and Renata Scotto. Following the rivalry between Adriana and the Princesse de Bouillon as they fight for Maurizio's love while, off stage and on the sidelines, poor Michonnet, the stage manager at the Comédie-Française is also in love with Adriana. Cilea’s enchanting score includes stunning arias for each of the principal characters.

Carmen (1/31)

Novelist Prosper Merimee’s iconic gypsy – a woman desired by every man but determined to remain true to herself – is the title role and compelling force in this exciting masterpiece.  Don José is the soldier who falls under her spell and sacrifices everything for her love, only to be cast aside when the toreador Escamillo piques Carmen’s interest. This thrilling tale comes to life, from its lighthearted beginning to its inevitably tragic climax, heightened by Bizet’s melodious and compelling score!

La Fille du Regiment (2/28)

Experience a feast of bel canto fireworks, including a show-stopping tenor aria with its nine high Cs (Yes, nine of them!). This frothy comedy mixes humor with a rush of buoyant melody and notorious vocal challenges. The story of a young orphan girl raised by an army regiment as their mascot begins at the moment of her first stirrings of love. Complications (and comedy) ensue when her true identity is discovered. The action is startlingly simple and unencumbered by intricate subplots, allowing the full charm of the characters and their virtuosic music to come across in an uninhibited way.
