Learning Unlimited; Modernist Architecture

Thu, November 21, 2019 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join Vic Liptack for a discussion of Modernism: Architecture and the 20th Century Context

Vic suggests that we ask how Modernism changed the way we think about the built environment. Building on the work of Paul Weidlinger, Modernist architect and engineer we will look at the built environment – architecture, infrastructure, public art – to investigate Modernism's intentional break with the past.

This discussion will consider how the confluence of new knowledge, new technology, and a new way of thinking about human experience profoundly affected our future and drawing on many works, including those designed or engineered by Paul Weidlinger, as examples of Modernism as a practice, not merely a style.

Paul Weidlinger’s story is told in The Restless Hungarian, by Tom Weidlinger. See Tom’s Nov. 14 lecture.)

M Victoria (Vic) Liptak served as associate dean of Woodbury’s School of Architecture. In her earlier roles as shop master, adjunct instructor, and ranked full time faculty, Vic taught architecture and design. Vic has served as chief academic officer at Brooks Institute in Ventura, California; Kendall College of Art and Design, Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and at Woodbury University in southern California.
