Learning Unlimited: They Shall Not Grow Old

Tue, November 12, 2019 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join Oak Dowling for a discussion of this film by Peter Jackson.  Many reviews call it the best documentary ever made and we will see and discuss clips from the film.

The film is a revolutionary breakthrough in technology using old (1914-1918), black and white, silent WWI films from the Imperial War Museum in London. Director Jackson cleans and repairs the film, slows the frames to 24 per second (standard rate), colorizes and adds sound, including speech to the people in the film and narration by veterans. It brings the past alive and into the present.” (L.A. Times)

“They Shall Not Grow Old” is a tribute paid by the present to the past, and what a gorgeous gift it turns out to be. The past is the army of invariably anonymous British soldiers who brought bravery, stoicism and grit to the years of trench warfare on the Western Front that made World War I a cataclysm unlike any seen before. The present is the kind of extraordinary state of the art computer generated special effects typically used to make invented superhero antics feel more real than they have a right to.
