Lifelong Learning: Politics in Film

Mon, September 9, 2019 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join Harry Chotiner to explore what makes a film political and what makes a good political film?

Over the three sessions, view three films: one which is transparently political and two that are not as explicitly political.

In our discussions, interrogate the label "political," explore our understandings of the film's political implicit and explicit political values, and see whether these films are political in similar or distinct ways.

Analyze what makes a good film; ask whether a "good film" can fail as a "political film", and, similarly, whether a film we might think is weak can still be a good political film.

Finally, look at what were the political lessons these films tried to engage and whether they were successful in conveying those political values and why. We will view Possible films are Lone Star (USA), and Cache (France) and decide on the third film once the class is underway.
