Jews & Comic Books (Virtual)

Tuesday, August 30 @ 5:00 pm6:00 pm

Join us as Abraham Riesman takes us through the the marvelous world of Jews in the comic books and how jews built the superhero industry.

Jews built the superhero industry. The first American comic-book companies were all run by Jewish businessmen and powered by Jewish labor. The most popular characters they created may not have been explicitly Jewish on the page, but they’re deeply rooted in the Jewish immigrant experience. One company, in particular, stands above them all as the leading superhero brand in the world today: Marvel. But who were the Jews behind Marvel Comics, and how did their Jewishness influence their product?

Abraham Riesman, the author of True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee (Penguin Random House), will dig into the complicated intersection of Jewishness and superhero comics, largely through the lens of the two Jews who built Marvel: Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (born Stanley Martin Lieber and Jacob Kurtzberg) and will be approachable for anyone and everyone, regardless of prior knowledge.
