They range from probing looks at Jewish arts and culture (both contemporary and traditional) and spiritual exploration to ongoing free classes in Israeli folk dancing Torah study. Judaism and Christianity To understand Judaism is to understand roots of Christianity. Explore the evolution of Jewish religious perspectives from the end of the 1st Temple Period (586 BCE) to beginnings of early Christianity. Study dynamic primary texts from the New Testament, Gnostic gospels, and Dead Sea Scrolls in translation. Survey the history, beliefs, rituals, symbols, motifs, and experience of this dynamic period. No knowledge of Hebrew, Judaism, Christianity assumed or required. Thursdays, 10:30am-12noon
Exploring Opera with James Sokol: With sumptuous orchestral music, gorgeous singing and well-crafted words, Rigoletto tells the heartbreaking story of a hunchback jester, his naïve daughter and a licentious duke. By discussing the libretto and comparing video clips of three different productions, you will journey through the splendor of this masterpiece - a terrific experience for the opera newcomer and longtime fan.
