Books Beyond Borders
Book & Film Club

AJWS is partnering with the Osher Marin JCC to launch a special edition of our Books Beyond Borders club in Marin! Four times a year, we will feature a book and film pairing that connects to AJWS’s mission to promote human rights and end poverty in the developing world. We will watch highlights of the film together and then explore how the themes in both the book and film can offer a deeper understanding of current global issues and AJWS’s work to build a more just and equitable world. (You do not need to read the entire book to participate in the discussion.)

November’s book and film will take us to Liberia:

Mighty Be Our Powers

A memoir by Leymah Gbowee,

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and AJWS grantee

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

Award-winning documentary film

Through Gbowee’s memoir and the feature film that tells her story, we will witness the power of grassroots activism to alter the history of nations. Fed up with years of civil war in Liberia, Gbowee mobilized thousands of ordinary women who helped bring peace, armed only with white T-shirts, prayer and the courage of their convictions. Their actions helped end the bloodshed and set the stage for the election of Africa's first female head of state.

The film won “Best Documentary” at Tribeca Film Festival and was an “Official Section” at Sundance. View the trailer here.
