Learning Unlimited: Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence
Mon, April 24, 2017 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
In partnership with the nonprofit Wonderfest, we will welcome the Chief Scientist of Berkeley’s SETI, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Dan Werthimer. Dan will describe the rationale for past and future searches for extraterrestrial Intelligence, and will show how new technologies are revolutionizing SETI
Dan Werthimer is co-founder and chief scientist of the SETI@home project and directs other UC Berkeley SETI searches at radio, infrared and visible wavelengths, including the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Radio Emissions from Nearby Developed Intelligent Populations (SERENDIP). He is also the principal investigator for the worldwide Collaboration for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research (CASPER).
“Breakthrough Listen”; The Breakthrough Prize Foundation has committed $100 Million to UC Berkeley and other institutions for the most comprehensive Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) ever conducted. Berkeley SETI Research Center conducts experiments searching for electromagnetic signatures of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations, spanning wavelengths from radio to visible light.
Werthimer has taught courses at universities in Peru, Egypt, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Kenya. He has published numerous papers in the fields of SETI, radio astronomy, instrumentation and science education; he is co-author of "SETI 2020" and editor of "Astronomical and Biochemical Origins and the Search for Life in the Universe".
