From the Abacus to iPhones

The seventeenth century is one of the most exciting periods in the history of mathematics. The era saw the invention of analytic geometry and calculus.  Also during this time, several individuals began working on ways to coax answers to arithmetic problems from machines.  This activity led to the invention of the first mechanical calculators, the precursors of our modern computers.  Professor John Martin of Santa Rosa Junior College has studied these fascinating machines in person!  Join us for a discussion of the contributions of Blaise Pascal, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Wilhelm Schickard.
