Exploring Opera
Met Early Spring HD Insights

Join singer/instructor Deborah Rosengaus or instructor James Sokol for insights into the live (and in encore) operas that are part of the Met Opera HD series, seen at local cinemas in February and March.  Video and audio clips bring the excitement of performance into the discussion!  The classes will focus on:

March 9 - James Sokol shares insights into Verdi’s stunning La Traviata, the classic tale of the courtesan with a heart of gold which started as book, then play by Alexandre Dumas, jr. (The Lady of the Camellias) has also been turned into ballet and films (think Greta Garbo in Camille or Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge). However, the opera remains the most beloved and performed version of all.  To hear soprano Venera Gimadieva and tenor Michael Fabiano sing the famous Brindisi (“Drinking Song”) from Act I, please click here.

March 23rd - Deborah Rosengaus returns to focus on Mozart’s melodious Idomeneo, the opera seria (“serious opera”) about the King of Crete’s vow to sacrifice to Neptune (the God of the sea) the first living creature he meets ashore should he return to his homeland safely after a storm. Alas, the first person he sees turns out to be his own son, who is loved by two different women. A love triangle? A sacrifice? Come find out how it all plays out set to Mozart’s gorgeous tunes!  To hear soprano Hildegarde Behrens sing the Elettra’s Act III Aria “D'Oreste, d'Ajace,” please click here.
