Art & Remembrance: Fabric of Survival

Part II of Exhibit | Part I at Osher Marin JCC

The Marin community will gather to remember and honor the memory of those who perished. Hear personal stories of survivors and a recitation of Memorial Scroll names. Guest speaker Bernice Steinhardt will talk about her mother, survivor Esther Nisenthal Krinitz, whose embroidered tapestries trace her memories of pre-war Poland. An exhibit of Esther’s work is on view at both Congregation Kol Shofar and at the Osher Marin JCC (see below).

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

40 years after the Holocaust, Esther Nisenthal Krinitz chose a unique way to retell her childhood memories of pre-war Poland and incredible story of survival: through stitching and embroidery.

In 1977, at the age of 50, Krinitz began creating her works of fabric art. Trained as a seamstress, but with no training in art, she ultimately created 36 remarkable fabric pictures of strong, vivid images and folk-art realism, meticulously stitching the narrative of her story beneath each picture.

In this exhibit, view life-sized photographs of Esther’s exquisite needlework panels.
