Early Childhood Education (ECE)

The Osher Marin JCC Early Childhood Education Center (ECE) is an award-winning early childhood education center providing children with a safe, nurturing environment to grow and learn as unique individuals. More than just a preschool, we are a supportive community of families and staff working together to provide care and eduction for children.

ECE is part of The Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, located in San Rafael, CA. The Center has provided educational, social, cultural, and fitness programs to the community since 1946. ECE/Southern Marin Jewish Community Preschool

Teacher’s Aide or Assistant

Supervisor: An ECE or SMJCP director or coordinator with the day-to-day supervision of the ECE or SMJCP teacher.

Qualifications

The person selected for this position must have the required units in early childhood education or be enrolled continuously in at least 3 units per semester towards a teacher level child center permit and be able to relate warmly to the toddlers and/or young children in his/her care.  While helping to maintain the team climate, s/he should project a willingness and ability to take direction from supervising teacher and/or director.  S/he is expected to actively participate with the children in the classroom environment and to attend work regularly and consistently.  This person should be flexible and self-directed and have a positive attitude about discipline and respect for the individuals and individual differences.

All ECE/SMJCP staff members working directly with children need to be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Responsibilities

Aides are responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

 General

    Under the supervision of the teacher, Assist with room preparation and/or clean up as needed, including:

  • Easel and paints
  • Table activities
  • Snacks and lunches
  • Gathering, preparing and putting away supplies
  • Playground
  1. Maintain ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and age appropriate learning environment of the classroom and the play yard.
  2. Provide physical and emotional care for the children including diapering and/or changing, meals, naptime, and  meeting needs as appropriate.
  3. Interact with the children reflecting respect, compassion and willingness to gently guide the child while providing supervision, both indoors and out.
  4. Work with the children individually and in small groups
  5. Be aware of areas needing attention and be willing to step in for children, teachers, and co-workers
  6. Understand and articulate the philosophy of the school.

Communication

 
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately with fellow staff members, leadership team and administrative staff and work in cooperation and with respect for colleagues. Maintain a professional relationship with all parents, with courtesy and respect.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and be accountable for all information disbursed at such meetings and in written format.
  • Participate in recommended training programs and in-service workshops and other opportunities for professional growth.
  • Assist in public relations and community building events sponsored by the school.
  • Notify team staff as well as administrative staff of own absences.
  • Maintain professional standards and conduct with a positive attitude towards the program.
  • Respect confidentiality of school related information.
  • Perform other duties, as requested by supervisor.
Salary & Benefit
  1. Staff hired at the Aide classification, unless grandfathered, must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 ECE units per semester, move to Assistant levelupon completion of 6 ECE or CD units.
  2. Staff hired at the assistant level must have completed at least 6 ECE or CD units and must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 units per semester toward a teacher center permit and have the demonstrated ability to perform all job responsibilities as described in the Assistant Teacher/Aid job description.

Early Childhood Teachers/Associate Teachers, Assistant Teachers – Southern Marin Jewish Community Preschool (Tiburon)

The Southern Marin Jewish Community Preschool is a collaborative program of the Osher Marin JCC and Congregation Kol Shofar. This program reflects the philosophy and nature of both organizations and operates as a part of the award winning, nationally accredited Osher Marin JCC Early Childhood Center.  Our program views children, families and staff members as a community of active learners, guided by the wisdom of Jewish tradition. Constructivism and emergent curriculum are among the core principles of our approach to early childhood education.

The Southern Marin Jewish Community Preschool is entering its fourth year of operations and is in a growth phase.  Our staffing needs reflect increased numbers of new children and classrooms.  We offer a unique opportunity for early childhood professionals who are striving for excellence, innovation and professional growth.  The school is an early childhood center serving children between the ages of 2 and 5.

Positions available:  There are five openings, including teachers/ associate teachers, and assistant teachers, Monday through Friday, 30 to 32 hours a week.

Requirements:  All applicants need to have the ability and skills to be nurturing, responsible, and dedicated to the creation of a safe and stimulating learning environment for young children. They need to have the ability and skills to build on the children’s strengths and to help them develop their relationships with the world around them. Teachers are required to have at least 24 units of ECE/CD and a degree or additional specialization. Associate teachers are required to have at least 12 units of ECE and to continue with their professional education. Assistant teachers are required to have a minimum of 6 ECE units and to continue their professional education. Experience in Jewish early childhood education preferred. All staff members must be able to communicate warmly and professionally with children and adults.

Compensations include health club membership, comprehensive and generous benefits package and paid support for professional development in Early Childhood Education. Starting pay range in September, depending on the number of ECE units for all positions: Teacher $18.34 - $18.70 per hour, Associate Teacher $15.30 – $15.61 per Assistant Teacher $12.53 – $12.78 per hour.

Southern Marin Jewish Community Preschool Teacher

The teacher reports to the Southern Marin Site Director.  The person in this position works directly with the children and their families enrolled in the Southern Marin program.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities to be shared with co-teachers in a teamwork model will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Interactions with children must reflect respect, compassion and a willingness to gently guide the child.
  • Plan, implement, reflect upon and document developmentally appropriate curriculum for the children in accordance with the policies and the philosophy of the school.
  • Gear the program to the needs of the individual child with concerns for his/her interests,individual style and stage of development; and to the class as a group.  Help each child become aware of his/her role as a member of the group, while reinforcing positive self-esteem, as well as consciously promoting a diverse and anti-bias atmosphere.
  • Intentional, ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and appropriate learning environment of the classroom and play yard.
  • Keep records on each child, to include weekly and monthly attendance sheets, incident log, developmental growth, conference records and notes home.
  • Document each child’s learning experiences and developmental growth and use the documentation to guide in planning the curriculum.
  • Maintain and implement procedures to ensure the health and safety of the childrenensuring they are under supervision at all times.
  • Assume an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff.
  • Create and work towards goals of an annual professional growth plan with mutual goals with supervisor including meeting the required minimum of 105 hours of approved professional training every five years.
  • Attend all staff meetings and be accountable for all information disbursed at such meetings and in written format.
  • Participate in recommended professional development programs and in-service workshops and other opportunities for professional growth.
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional and effective communication and supportiveties with children, staff, parents, and third party consultants to meet the individual needs of children and their families, which establish a partnership between school and home for the child.
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers formally through scheduled Parent/Teacher conferences, weekly newsletters and daily program white board/documentation.
  • Conduct home visits as required.
  • Understand and articulate the philosophy of the school.
  • Assist in public relations and community building events sponsored by the school.
  • Teachers act as a model for aides and assistant teachers and are mentors for their training and development.  Give clear directions and feedback to aides and assistants egularly.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately with fellow staff members, ECE school Directors, coordinators, managers and Department Administrative Assistant and work in cooperation and with respect for fellow staff members.
  • Maintain professional standards and conduct and positive work ethic.
  • Respect confidentiality of school-related information.
  • Perform other duties, as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Teachers hired at the Teacher level must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children with a minimum of AA or higher in CD, ECE or equivalent;(OR any AA or BA with at least 60 units + 24 college credits in ECE or CD; OR 24 units 0f CD + 16 general education units and current enrollment in AA or BA program) and demonstrated ability to perform all job responsibilities as described in Teacher job description.
  • Teachers hired at the Associate Teacher level must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children with a minimum of 12 ECE or CD units and the demonstrated ability to perform all job responsibilities as described in the Teacher job description.  If candidate does not have at least an AA degree s/he must be continually enrolled in AA program or CD or ECE classes to continue in this level of position. 
  • Proficient command of the English language for effective communication.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Substitutes

We are looking for substitutes to work with our teaching team Monday through Friday  between the hours of 8:30 and 6:00 pm on an on-call basis. We are looking for nurturing and responsible individuals who will provide a safe and stimulating environment for children to explore, grow, and develop their own natural curiosity and love of learning. We prefer hiring substitutes who are professionally prepared as teachers of young children, with a minimum of 12 units in the field of early child education and development however other caring individuals with experience with young children will be considered. Substitutes must be sensitive in communicating with others and be able to relate professionally with children and adults.

Position includes health club use and substitutes are in line to be considered to fill regular and/or permanent positions as they become available.
