Our History & Campus
The idea for a multipurpose Jewish center began in 1946 when a small
group of Jews living in Marin first gathered to form a Jewish Community
Center. The group was inspired by a rabbi's moving presentation of a
Torah discovered during World War II in Czechoslovakia in an abandoned
building about to be demolished. Declared the rabbi, "I have come half-way
around the world to bring this Torah from a Jewish community that died
to a Jewish community that is about to be born."
In 1947, local leadership incorporated the Marin Jewish Community Center
and began operating in a house at Mission and Forbes Street in San Rafael.
By the early 1960's, the JCC had outgrown its facility, resulting in
the creation of a new home for the JCC in 1967 at 200 North San Pedro
Road. The Center's existing programs took up residence here and the
facility included a pool. Membership increased to 400 families. This
number would triple by 1980.
Thus began a partnership of the Osher Marin JCC, Congregation Rodef
Sholom and Brandeis-Hillel Day School with the help of the Jewish Community
Federation to formulate plans for a Marin Jewish Community Campus, one
of the first of its kind in North America. Following months of research,
design, and a major fundraising campaign, the project broke ground in
1988. In the winter of 1990, the new 87,000 square foot Jewish campus
opened. Today the Center has over 7,000 members and has over 2,000 people
coming through our doors everyday.
